For those seeking a luxurious escape into the heart of nature, Austria offers an exceptional blend of stunning landscapes, timeless tradition, and world-class hospitality. Immerse yourself in the magnificence of Austria’s Grossarltal Valley and embark on an unforgettable journey to Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort—a luxury retreat where the spirit of the Alps comes to life.
A Personal Connection to The Sound of Music
The enchanting scenery of Austria has always held a special place in the hearts of many, especially for those who grew up watching the timeless classic The Sound of Music. Stepping off the plane in Salzburg, you can’t help but be reminded of the film’s breathtaking backdrops—the vast rolling hills, pristine meadows, and majestic mountains that come alive with music.
This year, Austria celebrates the 60th anniversary of The Sound of Music, a fitting tribute to the country’s rich history and the incredible beauty of the Austrian Alps. The valley where the Hettegger family’s Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort is nestled seems to echo with the same joy and energy that filled the film, inviting visitors to experience it firsthand.

A Family Legacy of Excellence
Das Edelweiss is not just another luxurious hotel—it’s a manifestation of family passion, history, and careful craftsmanship. Owned and operated by the Hettegger family, this stunning resort has transformed over the years into a world-class destination.
The property, which began as a modest guesthouse with 14 rooms and a rustic café, now boasts a 7,000-square-meter spa, expansive outdoor and indoor pools, a water slide park, and beautifully designed suites that exude modern alpine charm. After a comprehensive renovation program, the resort now offers a harmonious blend of traditional alpine elements and cutting-edge design, ensuring that every corner delights and inspires.
During the extensive renovation, carving out a section of their mountain behind, the Hettegger family painstakingly relocated a historic chapel into the heart of the hotel, a poignant gesture that reflects their deep respect for their roots and commitment to preserving the rich cultural heritage that has shaped their family’s legacy.
From the moment you arrive, the combination of warm oak wood, natural stone, and golden lighting design envelops you in an atmosphere of relaxed luxury. As Peter Hettegger, the resort’s senior boss, puts it: “It’s always been our goal to make Das Edelweiss more than just a hotel. It’s a place that celebrates both tradition and modernity.”

Immersed in Nature and Wellbeing
Das Edelweiss is a sanctuary for the body and soul, offering an expansive Mountain Spa that spans five floors and caters to both adults and families. The spa features an indoor water slide park, outdoor pools, numerous saunas, and an extensive menu of wellness treatments. Whether you’re indulging in a traditional facial, a lavender bath, or a full-body bodywrap, each experience is designed to rejuvenate and soothe.
For those who prefer outdoor activities, the resort offers a range of experiences that allow you to truly immerse yourself in the natural surroundings. Start your morning with a yoga class either in the indoor studio or on the grass rooftop, where the fresh mountain air and early morning sunshine make every moment feel magical. You can also explore hiking trails, try paragliding over the valley, or bike through the mountains, while your little ones enjoy the resort’s dedicated children’s spaces, including a nursery, indoor activity centre, and water slide park featuring 5 slides over 3 floors for all age groups. There is also a programme of Summer activities for children which includes kids yoga, e-bike training and soccer camp.
Unmatched Culinary Delights
No luxury experience is complete without exceptional dining, and Das Edelweiss certainly does not disappoint. Guests are treated to a wide range of culinary delights, from locally-inspired dishes to international favourites, all made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients. Whether you’re dining at the Sirloin Grill & Dine, enjoying a traditional alpine meal at the resort’s elegant restaurant, or sipping wine from the resort’s extensive cellar, every meal here is an experience to savour.
The resort’s dedication to exceptional service extends to every detail. In addition to the family-friendly amenities, there’s a boutique offering carefully curated fashion and accessories, perfect for picking up something stylish and special during your stay.
A Summer of Exploration
Beyond the hotel’s luxurious offerings, thanks to the concierge service, it is easy to enjoy the surrounding region is a playground for adventurers. During my visit to the Kösserlhäusl Local History Museum in Grossarl (owned by the family hotel), I had the delightful opportunity to learn how to make Krapfen, the region’s iconic farmer’s doughnuts, while exploring the museum’s fascinating exhibits. The museum, which is open from June through October, housed in a beautifully preserved 16th-century miner’s home, offers a rare glimpse into the past, with its collection of farming tools, traditional costumes, and the historic Rauchkuchl kitchen, which still boasts an original Kobel stove—a true testament to the Kössler family’s enduring heritage.
To fully embrace the beauty of the Austrian Alps, hire an e-bike to ride up the mountain (or, in my case, opt for a taxi) to reach the charming Breitenebenalm Chalet, here we were treated to a selection of traditional, locally-sourced dishes, all while surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views of the sprawling meadows and majestic peaks—an idyllic and peaceful setting that made every bite even more delightful.
Whether you’re looking for an active day on the trails or a more leisurely excursion, the resort’s concierge service and prime location offers something for everyone.
Just a short drive away, the historic city of Salzburg awaits, with its medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress, charming cobbled streets, and local boutiques. It’s the perfect day trip for anyone looking to experience a blend of culture and history in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. During your stay, take advantage of their unique partnership with Mercedes-Benz-Austria. As an exclusive partner hotel, they offer guests the opportunity to test the latest Mercedes-Benz models for free.

The Perfect Family Getaway
Das Edelweiss is ideal for families seeking a truly memorable vacation. With activities to suit all ages—whether it’s thrilling water slides, nature walks, or yoga for adults and children alike—there’s something for every member of the family. The resort also ensures that parents can enjoy some well-deserved relaxation, offering adults-only spaces and indulgent spa treatments while the kids are entertained.
A Year-Round Destination
While summer at Das Edelweiss is a magical experience, the resort’s allure doesn’t fade with the seasons. As winter rolls in, the area transforms into a wonderland of snow-covered mountains, perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and cozy fireside relaxation. With a cable car station just moments from the resort, a heated ski depot and EDELSPORTS rental for ski and snowboard gear getting to the slopes couldn’t be easier.
As I bid farewell to Das Edelweiss and make my way to their charming hotel in Bavaria, I’m already dreaming of returning in the winter months. This resort isn’t just a destination—it’s a sanctuary, a place to reconnect with nature, rejuvenate the body, and immerse yourself in a legacy of alpine hospitality.
Whether you’re seeking a luxury retreat for rejuvenation, an adventurous escape into nature, or a cultural exploration of Austria’s rich history, Das Edelweiss Salzburg Mountain Resort promises an experience unlike any other. Indulge in the ultimate summer escape in the Austrian Alps—where tradition, wellness, and luxury meet in perfect harmony.
