Experts Share Their Insights into the Most Common Playground Hazards

Playgrounds are vital spaces for children to develop physically, socially, and emotionally – yet, they can also pose significant risks when equipment is improperly maintained or designed.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)approximately 40,000 children are injured on playgrounds annually, with many incidents being preventable. Awareness of common play equipment dangers can help caregivers and playground inspectors prevent avoidable accidents and injuries in the future.

Sovereign Play, an outdoor play equipment and surfaces provider, has looked into the most prevalent risks associated with playgrounds and play equipment while offering expert advice to ensure safer play environments.

Darran Hine, Sales Director at Sovereign Play commented: “Swings, slides, and fireman’s poles are exciting features but can sometimes lead to accidents due to their movement, speed, or height. These risks can be minimised with age-appropriate designs, proper deck heights, and compliant equipment, such as BS EN 1176-certified slides

“By understanding these hazards and taking proactive measures, schools, communities and caregivers can significantly reduce accidents and injuries.”

According to studies from the RoSPA, 40% of playground accidents are related to equipment, and of these 80% are the result of a fall onto a hard or harmful surface, making this one of the main causes of injury on playgrounds.

Darran Hine commented: “Weekly checks by staff and professional inspections every six months can prevent small issues from turning into major hazards.”
