How to Better Care for Your Eyes

Good eyesight is not achieved overnight, but through consistent, healthy habits. This guide outlines six actionable steps you can take to achieve and maintain optimal eye health. 

Prioritize Professional Care

Professional eye care is more than just updating your glasses prescription; it’s a vital part of overall preventive healthcare. Regular comprehensive eye exams can detect issues early and ensure you receive personalized recommendations. 

The American Optometric Association advises that individuals aged 18 to 64 with low risk factors get an examination at least every two years, and annually, or as recommended for those at risk. For adults 65 and older, it is recommended that they undergo annual screenings or as directed by their healthcare provider. Shield Your Eyes from the Sun

Your overall health is linked to your eye health. If you’re a smoker, quit immediately, as smoking increases the risk of optic nerve damage and cataracts. If you have chronic health conditions, work with your doctor to manage them to prevent related eye complications. 

Stay active, as regular exercise improves circulation to the eyes and helps manage conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, which can cause significant vision problems. Drink plenty of water to reduce eye dryness and make sure to get sufficient sleep.
