Therme Manchester Build Begins
A Landmark Wellness Destination for the UK
Therme Manchester has officially begun construction on what will become the UK’s largest wellbeing resort. The £450 million project, located in TraffordCity, is one of the most significant developments in the North of England in recent years. Once complete in 2028, the resort will redefine wellness in the UK, offering a unique combination of spa experiences, thermal bathing, fitness zones, immersive art, sustainable gardens, and world-class dining.

‘Beyond Groundbreaking’ – A Celebration of New Beginnings
On Friday 12th September, Therme Manchester hosted “Beyond Groundbreaking”, a celebration to mark the start of construction. Local leaders, partners, and community members gathered on-site to honour the project’s vision of creating a transformational space for health, happiness, and social connection.
Job Creation and Community Support
The resort will bring significant economic benefits to Greater Manchester. During construction, Therme will generate around 2,500 jobs (with up to 1,200 on-site at peak times). Once open, the resort will employ 650 full-time staff, while also building long-term partnerships with local businesses, charities, and community groups. Therme Manchester has already supported initiatives such as the Manchester Marathon, NHS programmes, and cultural events – with plans to expand this community engagement further.

Sustainability at the Heart
Sustainability is central to the project. Therme Manchester is aligned with Manchester’s 2038 carbon net zero goals, using innovative construction methods such as air source heat pumps and 3D printing of components to reduce emissions and waste. On a per-guest basis, the resort’s carbon footprint will be significantly lower than overseas travel or traditional spa experiences.

What Visitors Can Expect
Once completed, Therme Manchester will offer:
- State-of-the-art swimming and thermal bathing areas
- Luxury spa and fitness facilities
- Immersive digital art experiences
- Sustainable, biodiverse gardens
- Restaurants and cafés serving diverse, healthy cuisine
This unique blend will make Therme Manchester a year-round wellness destination accessible to all, designed to enhance quality of life across the region and beyond.
A Vision for the Future
Professor David Russell, CEO of Therme UK, describes the project as “a once-in-a-generation development where wellbeing, sustainability, art, and culture come together.” Backed by Peel Waters, Sir Robert McAlpine, and Trafford Council, the project has been hailed as a game-changer for Greater Manchester, set to attract millions of visitors and redefine wellness in Europe.
