4 household changes to make your home greener

Thinking green is something that many of us are doing right now. Different aspects of our lives are changing in order to make our world more sustainable.

This is largely because of climate change, where we’re seeing the planet becoming warmer. As a result, there’s a move towards making some significant changes. The UK government has a goal in place to reach carbon net zero by 2050. As such, in recent years there’s been the announcement of the ban on petrol and diesel motors from 2030 and the introduction of electric vehicle grants to encourage motorists to think green when they drive.

Read on for some ideas to see how you can change things in your property to make things greener.

Why go green?

There are several benefits to enjoy from thinking sustainably. As well as helping the planet, it can be beneficial for you as an individual.

By incorporating more energy efficient ideas, you may find that you have the opportunity to reduce the amount you spend on energy bills – something that’s very much in the news right now, given the cost-of-living crisis. Being able to reduce costs can help reduce worries and stress about money and budgeting.

Going green can also make home more comfortable. As more of us are working from home, having a relaxing haven to retreat to after the workday is done is good for our wellbeing.

So, by making some real updates, we can shift the dial closer to carbon net zero while helping our own wellness levels.

Adding double or triple glazing

Since April 2002, double glazing has been a requirement on any new buildings being built. Additionally, any replacement windows must, as of this date, also be double glazed.

While double glazing is required to keep heat in and enhance energy efficiency, triple glazing is expected to soon become the standard. This extra pane is estimated to be 40-50% more thermally efficient than older double glazing, making it a savvy choice for those who are looking to make their homes more efficient in the coming years.

Greener alternatives

There is a gas boiler ban coming into place soon. From 2025, these boilers will be banned from new-build properties and by 2035 all gas boiler installations will be completely phased out. Finding alternative heat sources now, such as solar panels and heat pumps designed to suit the energy efficiency needs of homeowners, could help to prep your property for this change to how we access energy in our homes.

In addition, you can choose white goods with an energy rating of A. This information is part of the spec for products like washing machines and fridges, so it’s easy to find these. Also, check your electricity and gas tariffs to find one that first your budget and needs and swap traditional bulbs for LED alternatives.

Low flow products

By installing innovative water-saving solutions such as Saniflo toilet products, including a low-flow showerhead and toilet, you can significantly reduce your home’s water usage.  While this means your shower head may not be as powerful as it was, you’ll be doing your bit for the environment by slowing things down. Plus, using less water can impact on your energy bills, reducing the amount you spend overall.

How are you updating your home to make things eco-friendly? Are you making some changes around your property or do you have plans in place to introduce energy efficient ideas soon?
