Have you got bags under your eyes? You probably live in Liverpool, the UK’s most sleep deprived and stressed city

Did you look in the mirror this morning and wish you could take the bags under your eyes on an all-inclusive holiday to the Bahamas? Well, chances are that your bed is located in Liverpool rather than London. Today Mindbody reveals its 2020 UK Wellness Index showcasing the most sleep deprived cities and the knock-on effects this might be having on their lives.

The UK Wellness Index revealed that Liverpool is the most sleep deprived city in the UK*. They must be having some great evenings given only 42% are getting seven to eight hours of shuteye a night. Either that or some seriously uncomfortable beds…

Whilst it might come as a surprise to those who live in the bustling capital, Londoners are actually the most well-rested of the five cities. An impressive 54% of London’s respondents confirmed that they sleep at least seven to eight hours a night. Coming in at a strong second are the citizens of Manchester. 52% of Mancunians are getting a solid eight hours of sleep a night.

The sleeping beauties in the capital leave no stone unturned to catch that extra 15 minutes of sleep outside the comforts of their own bed: 50% would love to try a nap pod in a nap bar compared to an average 43% across the UK.

What’s keeping you up?

Well, we can’t say for certain what’s keeping people up, but the findings from Mindbody’s UK Wellness Index suggest that there might be a correlation between the amount of exercise you do and how much sleep you get. Well-rested London get the most exercise, with 30% of respondents exercising 5 days a week or more. In last place is sleep-deprived Liverpool, with just 15% of Liverpudlians doing so.

Exercise, relax, sleep repeat

How does stress fit into the equation, if at all? There are some similar themes. Surprisingly, despite the hectic nature of the capital, 24% of Londoners felt little to no stress at all. Meanwhile, whatever Manchester’s doing, it’s clearly working because 27% of them are living relatively stress-free lives. Birmingham comes in third with 23%. The most stressed city? Quelle surprise, it’s the typical offenders again: Liverpool! Only 20% of Liverpudlians benefit from little to no stress. 14% even says to feel extremely stressed compared to only 10% in Birmingham.

The top 5 most relaxed cities according to the Wellness Index:

  1. Manchester
  2. London
  3. Birmingham
  4. Sheffield
  5. Liverpool

Phil Coxon, Managing Director, Mindbody Europe commented on today’s results: “We are very excited to be launching the inaugural Mindbody 2020 UK Wellness Index. Through data provided by both our businesses and consumers, we are able to reveal some fascinating insights into wellness practices across the country and understand how to empower the sector.
