How to Have a Happier, Healthier Team of Employees

Businesses should invest in their employees’ mental well-being simply because it’s the right thing to do, but there are also business benefits from making sure that your workforce has smiles on their faces. One study found that happy employees are 13% more productive, and it also makes it easier to attract and retain workers.

And what’s more, creating a workplace that benefits your employees’ mental well-being is a lot more straightforward than you might think. Mostly, it’s about making sure that all the essentials that employees want/need have been met.

So, what are those things? Let’s take a look.

Sense of Belonging

Humans are social creatures, and they want to feel like they are an important member of the tribe. You’ll often find that workplaces that have a high turnover and poor employee morale typically have no sense of community or connection.

Many businesses make the mistake of assuming that connections will be made purely because people are working together, but that’s not the case — or at least, it shouldn’t be assumed. Businesses should proactively invest in helping employees get to know one another by hosting events and creating space for workers to talk. It’s also recommended to give workers opportunities for professional and personal growth; that’ll demonstrate that the business is genuinely interested in helping the employee become the best version of themself.

Supporting Well-Being

The best employers are the ones that go above and beyond to really make sure that their employees’ mental well-being is as healthy as it can be. Mostly, this comes down to recognizing that managing all the demands of modern life can be challenging and taking steps to help employees whenever possible. That could involve initiating a hybrid working model that allows employees to work from home a few times a week, or offering EAP counselling to employees who are going through challenging personal and work-related issues. The business may also offer employees a wellness stipend, which they can use for gym memberships, yoga classes, and other activities that support their mental and physical well-being.

Open Communication

Businesses can do a lot to create a pleasant environment for their workers, but they’re also not mind readers — and neither are the employees. Open communication is the foundation of all strong relationships, and that includes in the workplace. Being open with workers about business operations, and allowing staff to speak up about any issues they may have, is an excellent way to resolve any minor issues before they become big problems, and will also develop trust.

A Smile-Inducing Office

Finally, take a look at your workplace: is it an inspiring, happy place to be? If not, then it may be having a subtle yet noticeable impact on worker happiness. Working to let in more natural light, refreshing the decor, adding relaxation areas, and all-around working to make the space more pleasant can do wonders. Focus particularly on letting in more natural light — studies have shown that it’s the office quality that employees want the most.
