Early hunger, irritability, and headaches often settle within one to two weeks. Changes in fasting glucose and insulin generally require four to twelve weeks and cannot be judged by appetite or bathroom scales. Blood testing is needed to determine whether those markers have moved.

Who Should Skip a Modified Fast

Headaches, irritability, and disrupted sleep can occur during the first fortnight. However, persistent dizziness, weakness, poor sleep, or difficulty concentrating is not evidence that the fast is “working.” It is a reason to stop rather than force adaptation.
