What is Feng Shui all about?

Living in Harmony

I am often asked, ‘What is Feng Shui all about?’ An ancient practice that originated from China is only the textbook answer.

What Feng Shui is really about is our relationship with our environment and our living space.

Understanding that our living environments have an immediate impact on our health and wellbeing is the first step to understanding how we can use Feng Shui a as a practical lifestyle tool.

When I recently moved from my house that I had been living in for ten years, I realised that the main quality that I was looking for in my next home was ‘beauty’. I looked at many houses until I finally found the one that gave me that sense of beauty. I dealt with lots of emotions and fears that arose from the move; feelings of insecurity and resistance to change. I also discovered that the feeling of home is a feeling that you take with you and plant in your new home. It is cultivated from a deep connection between yourself and the building that you choose to reside in.

So how does Feng Shui fit into everyday living?

Based on the idea that everything is connected, our homes can reveal a reflection of our lives. By using the Pa Kua chart, we can identify blockages in all areas of life. It is like looking at your life through the lens of your home. By seeing your life through the lens of your home, the sections that are heavy in atmosphere or material matter, for example clutter or accumulation of belongings from the past, reveal insight into the blockages in your life.

By clearing the physical matter and acknowledging the blockage, the energy is released and begins to flow freely again where it was once stagnant. This is reflected as an area to focus on in your life that needs some harmony and balance. For example, taking a look around your home you may notice a pile of old bills that are located in your wealth and prosperity area or a fading plant in your love and relationships area. The practice of Feng Shui is a practical tool that helps us see where our blockages are in life and what areas we need to pay some positive attention to.

In Feng Shui we always begin by clearing and cleansing the space and then focusing our energy in the areas of the home that need balance. This becomes a mindful practice that is supported by affirmations and visualisations.

From this practice we begin to develop a deeper connection with our living space and on a wider scale, a deeper connection to our planet.

By being mindful in our lifestyle choices and supporting sustainable, natural and organic living, we can contribute to the protection of our planet, our natural home and live in harmony with our environment.
