Top Energy Tips For A Feel-Good Winter
As the days become shorter and the nights draw in, it’s easy to feel like curling up and forgetting all about exercise and healthy eating. However, it’s more important than ever to keep energy levels up as the winter months set in.
So say goodbye to gloom and hello to zoom with these handy hints and tips from Emma Bullock-Lynch, Nutritionist for Wassen, to help you maintain energy levels and feel your best this season.
- Make the most of mornings
Once the sunlight does begin to peep through, make the most of your mornings and incorporate some movement into your daily routine. This will set the tone for your day and kick-start your mood and metabolism. This doesn’t have to be an hour session in the gym, try a brisk walk in the fresh air to catch the sunlight or some dynamic stretching such as yoga or Pilates on more gloomy days!
- Stay hydrated
Staying hydrated isn’t just important in the sunshine, it’s also important in the colder winter months too as cold air can be dehydrating. When we become dehydrated we can feel sluggish and tired, and our skin can become dry, so make sure you have a water bottle topped up and by your side all day long. Add a slice of lemon or some ginger to add flavour, and try fruit teas to avoid caffeine as both back tea and coffee can be dehydrating. You can also boost your water with an electrolyte supplement such as Wassen Hydrate + Replenish, packed with 13 vitamins, minerals and botanicals.
- Eat healthy fats
At this time of year, incorporating healthy fats into your diet is beneficial for skin health, energy levels and mood. Healthy fats can be found in foods such as avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. And of course don’t forget about the omega 3 fats DHA and EPA, mainly found in oily fish such as salmon, herring and mackerel.
- Sleep well
The good news is that winter is the perfect time to hunker down and consistently get good quality sleep. It might sound obvious but getting a good night’s sleep, every night, is so important for health and wellbeing. During sleep the body repairs itself, but can only do so once a deep, restorative sleep is achieved. Prepare yourself for sleep by switching off devices, avoiding stimulants such caffeinated drinks or alcohol and focus on relaxation with a soak in the tub, a good book or practising mindfulness.
