Embracing Our Differences: A Tribute to Patrick Stewart
The news of Patrick Stewart passing a few days ago made me stop and think.

To read all the wonderful messages he has received from his colleagues and to know he is one of the true greats has really made me think. Whilst I never got to see him in person on stage, I really wish I had!
Growing up in the 90s, Star Trek and X-Men were huge in my life! I loved reading comics and cartoons. I loved watching him take on the role of Professor X in the movies. He brought the character to life. In The Next Generation, he taught us what real leadership looks like. Captain Picard was someone who listened to everyone. He included everyone and took their opinions on board before making decisions. As Professor X, his real power was his ability to see the best in people.
This is what connected all of his characters. He always wanted to empower us. He encouraged us to think outside the box, explore and embrace our differences. This was also reflected in his life off screen. He was a strong advocate for his beliefs, his charities and was kind to his fans. It was so sad to hear about his fight with dementia. Dementia is a cruel disease which can devastate families.
I have sadly lost both my parent to dementia and know how much it affects them.
However, his legacy shows us how much we can be changed by someone we watch on screen. It reminds us that our greatest power in the real world is connecting with others.
As a writer and connector. I use my words to connect with people. I love interviewing people, especially those who spend their lives empowering others and being themselves. Asking someone to be vulnerable and tell me about their life, or the passion they are creating, is such a powerful conversation. Being able to write their story and share it with the world is a gift.
Patrick put so much of himself into his roles, and because he put himself out there, he truly made a difference in people's lives.
