When you travel often – or live between countries, projects and phases of life – something quietly shifts inside you. You’re not only collecting stamps in your passport, you’re also reshaping how you see yourself, your priorities and even your sense of belonging.

Many people notice a subtle feeling of being ‘between versions’ of who they used to be and who they are becoming, without ever having space to emotionally integrate that change.

In this article, we explore how movement transforms identity, why airports often trigger unexpected reflection, and how gentle tools such as EFT tapping can help your inner world catch up with the life you are actually living.

Changes in your environment change who you are – deeper than you may think

Everything around us affects us. And when you travel, you are constantly immersed in new environments, languages, rhythms and ways of living.

Often, these changes happen faster than you can make sense of them internally. Emotions, insights and experiences can quietly build up – and even when what you are living feels positive and exciting, it can still feel emotionally overwhelming.

As you move, you begin to absorb what is around you. Exposure to different cultures can gently challenge what you were taught to value, how you relate to others and how you see yourself.

You may find yourself thinking: I was always told to be this way… but I can see other people living very differently – and they seem comfortable. Maybe I can be that too.

Your identity starts to soften and become more flexible as you try to integrate what you are seeing with who you already are. At times, it can feel as if several versions of you are living side by side.

Why airports can deepen this ‘in between versions’ feeling

Airports have a unique way of bringing emotional luggage to the surface.

They are in-between places by nature – a pause between where you were and where you are going. In many ways, they mirror an in-between identity.

This is why airports can unexpectedly trigger reflection, tenderness or emotional intensity. They quietly invite you to notice what you are leaving behind, what you are stepping into – and who you are becoming in the process.

Your identity evolving is a natural and beautiful process – remember to be kind to yourself

It is important to know that this experience is deeply human.

In a culture that often values certainty, direction and constant progress, it is easy to judge yourself for feeling unsure during transitional phases. Yet when your life is changing, your sense of self is also reorganising. You are becoming something new – and that takes time to integrate.

In our fast-paced world, we often forget to give ourselves permission to actually live this process.

You don’t need to be hard on yourself for feeling ungrounded.
For feeling excited and grateful – while also feeling anxious or unsure.
For loving the opportunity you have – and still finding it difficult to make sense of everything.

These emotions are not contradictory. They are complementary.

This is a beautiful process of becoming. You are allowed to honour it, to slow down inside it, and to let it unfold in its own time.

Using EFT tapping to feel calmer and allow space for integration

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques. It is a gentle method that combines somatic elements (by lightly tapping on specific points on the body) with cognitive and emotional awareness.

It is based on the same principles as acupuncture, using your fingertips to tap on acupressure points – one on the side of the hand and eight across the face and upper body. There are also points on the fingers, which means it can be practised discreetly, even in public spaces such as airports.

As you tap, your nervous system receives calming signals and your body begins to settle. At the same time, you gently bring awareness to what you are feeling, allowing emotional tension and inner charge to soften and release.

When your body feels calmer and more grounded, your mind has the space it needs to integrate everything you have lived through – safely and naturally.

Over time, your sense of identity begins to reorganise in a way that feels more coherent and authentic, weaving together the parts of you that were shaped by different places, cultures and chapters of your life.
