Herbal teas helping women through pregnancy

For many, pregnancy is a time of incredible change both physically and emotionally. As women navigate the shifting demands of growing new life, one age-old ritual is making a quiet but powerful comeback: herbal teas.

“Herbal teas, when chosen carefully, can offer gentle support throughout pregnancy, from easing morning sickness to promoting rest and digestion.” says Anish Patel, co-founder of functional tea brand NutraTea.

Among the most commonly recommended pregnancy-safe options are chamomile, ginger, peppermint and raspberry leaf, each celebrated for their unique benefits in different stages of the journey.

Chamomile: A classic for calming the mind and body, chamomile’s mild sedative and anti-inflammatory properties can ease tension and digestive discomfort, particularly in the first and second trimesters.

Ginger: Often hailed as a pregnancy staple, ginger tea can help relieve morning sickness thanks to its natural anti-nausea and anti-inflammatory effects.

Peppermint: With its fresh aroma and cooling properties, peppermint tea can aid digestion and soothe bloating – a common issue as pregnancy progresses.

Raspberry leaf: Traditionally used to tone the uterus, raspberry leaf tea is often recommended after 32 weeks, under medical guidance, to help prepare the body for labour.

But as a word of caution – not all teas are safe. Herbal blends that contain pennyroyal, senna or excessive caffeine should be avoided, and the NHS advises no more than one to two cups of herbal tea per day during pregnancy.

In moderation certain herbal teas can offer real comfort, but always consult a midwife or doctor before adding new herbs to your routine.

“Alongside their functional benefits, herbal teas offer something more intangible yet just as important: a moment of stillness. The act of brewing and sipping a warm cup creates space to pause, breathe, and reconnect with the body – a simple, nurturing habit in a time of profound transformation.” continues Patel.

Whether it’s ginger in the morning, chamomile at night or peppermint after meals, pregnancy-safe teas can become small acts of self-care that support mothers-to-be from bump to baby.
