A Luxurious Getaway: Culloden Estate & Spa Unveils Stunning Upgrades and New Visual Identity

Found in the tranquil Holywood hills, overlooking Belfast Lough, Culloden Estate & Spa has long been celebrated as Northern Ireland’s leading 5-star property. Recently, it has elevated its grandeur with a £600,000 upgrade and a refreshed visual brand identity, making it the perfect destination for both short breaks and extended holidays. My recent overnight stay at this rejuvenated haven revealed a blend of luxurious accommodation, exquisite dining, and unparalleled wellness experiences.

Arrival and First Impressions

Arriving at Belfast City Airport, the journey to Culloden Estate & Spa was both convenient and scenic. A short 15-minute walk to the train station followed by a 10-minute ride to Cultra Station brought me close to the hotel. The short walk from the station to the hotel through its spectacular gardens, adorned with an array of sculptures, set the tone for the lavish experience ahead.

View from the Clock Tower Suite

Accommodation: The Clock Tower Suite

Upon arrival, the check-in process was seamless, and I made my way to the Clock Tower Suite on the 7th Floor. This suite offered stunning views of the Lough, combining modern luxury with timeless elegance. The suite’s decor, featuring rich colours and luxurious fabrics, created an inviting and comfortable ambiance. The attention to detail was evident, from the plush bedding to the welcome cupcakes.

The Spa Experience

After settling in, I made my way to the newly upgraded Spa at Culloden. The spa now boasts new gym equipment and an expanded class timetable, including Yoga and Pilates. I indulged in a nano facial, a refreshing and revitalising treatment that left my skin glowing. The spa’s serene atmosphere, combined with the expertise of the therapists, made it an oasis of tranquility.

Dining at The Lough Bar

Dinner at The Lough Bar was a culinary delight. The newly updated bar features striking fabrics and furnishings, creating a sophisticated yet cosy environment. The new menu showcased an array of delectable dishes, and I opted for the grilled salmon, gnocchi, peas and green sauce followed by sticky toffee pudding, but I also tried the ham hock Mac & cheese which was equally delicious. The flavours were fabulous, and the presentation was impeccable.

A Restful Night

The comfort of the bed in the Clock Tower Suite ensured a restful night’s sleep. The view was so spectacular that I chose to leave the curtains open, waking up to the early morning light reflecting off Belfast Lough. This serene wake-up call set the perfect tone for a morning walk along the coastal path before breakfast.

Breakfast at Cultra Inn

Breakfast at the Cultra Inn was another highlight. The inn has been upgraded with energy-efficient, state-of-the-art kitchen equipment and luxurious fixtures. The new seasonal breakfast menu offered a variety of options, from traditional Irish breakfasts to lighter, health-conscious choices. I enjoyed the Classic Eggs Benedict, but I heard that the Breakfast Brioche was a firm favourite of the other guests.

More Spa Indulgence and Activities

Post-breakfast, I returned to the spa for a back massage and pilates session. The newly introduced classes, offer guests a range of wellness activities. The massage was deeply relaxing, easing any remaining tension and enhancing my overall sense of well-being.

The Bollinger Champagne Garden

Lunch was a special experience in the Bollinger Champagne Garden, a new addition to the Culloden Estate. This alfresco haven, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Belfast Lough, is the perfect spot for a leisurely meal. The garden offers a drinks menu featuring Bollinger Champagne, handcrafted cocktails, and premium wines, complemented by a seasonal food menu. I savoured a selection of salads and light bites with a glass of Bollinger, enjoying the sights and sounds of the estate. The Bollinger Champagne Garden is open throughout the summer until September 2024, daily from 12pm to 9pm. The ‘Bolly Great Stay’ package starts at £365 per night in a Garden Room for two.

The Renovations and New Visual Identity

The extensive renovations at Culloden Estate & Spa are immediately noticeable upon entering. The ground floor has been completely re-carpeted, including the iconic staircase. The Drawing Room, now boasting a modern colour scheme and new soft furnishings, has undergone a complete renovation. The ornate plaster ceiling has been restored, and the design now exposes the original carpentry on the feature windows, blending historical charm with contemporary elegance.

The Lough Bar and five of Culloden’s prestigious suites have been upgraded with luxury bathrooms, furnishings, and fabrics. The estate’s grounds have also been enhanced with upgraded pedestrian access and a new lighting scheme that highlights the estate’s natural beauty.
