From a life-changing roll of the dice to more than three decades of helping people unwind, discover the benefits of reflexology, the holistic therapy linked to stress relief, relaxation and everyday wellness.

Here I explore the benefits of reflexology, the role of chance, and how one of London’s most established reflexology business became a wellbeing success story.

Curious to understand what reflexology actually feels like in practice and its after-effects, I booked a treatment to experience it first-hand.

What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complementary therapy that involves applying pressure to specific points on the feet, hands, face or ears. It works on the idea that these areas correspond to different organs and systems within the body. Some theories link reflexology to the concept of Qi (pronounced “chee”), a life force or energy that flows through the body. Practitioners believe it helps remove blockages and supports a more balanced flow of Qi, which encourages equilibrium in the body.

By stimulating these reflex points, it can decrease stress, aid relaxation and overall wellbeing. While not a medical treatment, many people include reflexology in their wider wellness routines.

Modern reflexology developed in the early twentieth century. However, its roots go back to ancient Egypt, China and India. Touch-based therapies were part of traditional healing practices.

Today, reflexology sits firmly within the wellness world. It attracts busy professionals, parents to those looking for a moment of calm in a fast-paced environment.

A Roll of the Dice

A few years ago, I met Marcos Pavlides, founder and managing director of Reflexions The Reflexology Shop. The business has branches in Bayswater, Chelsea and Clapham.

What stayed with me wasn’t just his passion for reflexology, but rather the inspiring story behind how it all began.

Back in 1993, Marcos found himself searching for direction. After experiencing reflexology for the first time and finding the experience stayed with him, he came across an advert for a reflexology training course practically on his doorstep. However, the £1,200 fee was far beyond his means.

On the morning the course was due to start, he made a decision that would change everything.

“I threw a dice,” he recalls.

He had been procrastinating that morning, so he gave himself six options:

– One: go back to bed

– Two: go for a run

– Three: have breakfast

– Four: meet friends

– Five: do tasks around the house

– Six: go on the course

The dice landed on six.

“Meant to be!” he adds.

Despite uncertainty around how he would fund it, he enrolled.

Then, several months later, as the cost became unavoidable, an insurance claim he had nearly forgotten about arrived unexpectedly through the post.

The amount was exactly £1,200.

For Marcos, this felt like confirmation that he was on the right path. It makes you wonder, how often do moments that feel like chance end up quietly shaping the direction of our own lives too?

Building Reflexions

After qualifying, opportunities gradually followed. He began building experience as a reflexologist before later working with other therapists to create a pop-up treatment space inside Whiteleys Shopping Centre in Bayswater.

What began as a temporary setup quickly built a loyal following and in time, became Reflexions’ first permanent home. When Whiteleys later closed, the shop relocated to Westbourne Grove, where it continues to operate today.

As demand for reflexology and wider wellbeing treatments grew, so too did Reflexions. A second clinic opened in Chelsea at The Courtyard on King’s Road, followed by a third in Clapham on Northcote Road.

Today, more than 60 therapists form part of the Reflexions team, offering reflexology alongside a range of massage and wellness treatments. Marcos says, “Reflexions is unique because of the amazing therapists who have been drawn to us. We come from a sacred place and are focused on helping others, rather than being a business. Everything is driven by authenticity and care.”

Three decades after that initial roll of the dice, his vision continues to grow, helping Londoners find moments of calm in the middle of busy lives.

“The most rewarding part,” Marcos says, “is seeing people leave feeling lighter, happier and more connected to themselves.”

Time for a Personal Experiment

Before my professional path crossed with Reflexions, I had never experienced reflexology.

In truth, I knew very little about it.

Like many people, I assumed it was simply a relaxing foot treatment- something pleasant, but not necessarily transformative. However, Marcos had spoken about reflexology with genuine conviction.

“You need to try it for yourself to feel the magic,” he said.

At the time, I smiled politely and moved on.

However, the idea stayed with me.

It’s easy to forget, when you’re caught up in the pace of everyday life, how important it is to pause and step away from the noise.

Over time, I heard more about reflexology and its effects on relaxation and stress. The more I heard, the more curious I became.

Eventually, I decided it was time to experience it for myself.

I booked a one-hour reflexology treatment at Reflexions The Reflexology Shop in Bayswater, London with a lovely therapist named Maria Padilla.

What Does a Reflexology Treatment Feel Like?

The treatment space was quiet, calm and removed from the pace of daily life. Soft lighting, deep purple tones and neatly arranged towels created a space designed for relaxation.

I settled into a reclining chair and was given a beautifully scented lavender eye mask. Within moments, I was fully immersed in the experience.

What can I say? It was unlike anything I expected.

The therapist applied pressure to different points on my feet and in doing so I became aware of sensations elsewhere in my body. Whether or not you fully subscribe to the theory behind reflexology, there was something grounding about the experience.

At one point, as pressure was applied to my big toe, I felt a release of tension in my head that was surprisingly noticeable. As someone who occasionally experiences migraines, the moment stood out.

Whether it was the treatment itself or simply slowing down for an hour, I can’t say with certainty.

What I do know is that I left feeling calmer, lighter and more at ease. Rather than rushing straight back into the day, I paused for a chai latte, put my AirPods in, and listened to classical pieces, watching the world rush by. For a change, it was me doing the pausing and observing, rather than being caught up in the rush.

Can Reflexology Help You Relax?

The biggest change came in the weeks that followed.

As a lifelong night owl, my evenings are usually when my mind feels most active. However, after the session, I noticed a subtle shift in my routine.

I found myself winding down earlier than usual, stepping away from the demands of everyday life with greater ease.

In addition, the usual urge to stay constantly stimulated or mentally switched on felt noticeably reduced. Instead, I began making space for moments of stillness. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why, whether due to the reflexology treatment itself or simply taking time out for myself, something had clearly changed.

What stood out most was how much more rested and balanced I felt in the days that followed. In a world that rarely slows down, that alone felt significant.

The Benefits of Reflexology for Stress, Relaxation and Wellness

Sceptics often dismiss reflexology as nothing more than an elaborate foot massage.

However, having now experienced it first-hand, that description feels incomplete.

It is like yoga being described as “just stretching”, a comparison that completely misses the full experience entirely.

Whether you are drawn to reflexology for stress relief, curious about holistic therapies and their wider benefits, or simply looking for a moment of calm in a busy life, its appeal is easy to understand.

Perhaps that is why Reflexions has continued to grow for more than thirty years.

Its story mirrors the therapy itself: small moments that create larger shifts over time.

  • A roll of the dice.
  • A chance encounter.
  • A pressure point on a foot.

For Marcos, one decision led to a lifelong path. Three decades later, that path continues to help people pause, reset and reconnect with themselves.

After my first reflexology treatment, I finally understood the simple promise behind the Reflexions slogan:

“Walk in. Float out.”

For once, it didn’t feel like just a slogan. It felt true.
