As high summer arrives and the light grows long and golden, ‘Sweet Orange’ offers a gentle remembering of how to lighten, how to play and how to let joy return, even after the heart has known heaviness.

There is a particular quality to July. The days seem to stretch a little longer. Gardens overflow with colour and fruit. Everywhere there is an invitation to slow down, wander outside, breathe more deeply and perhaps even play.

Yet many of us reach this point in the year carrying far more than sunshine. We carry responsibilities, worry, grief, exhaustion and the quiet habit of holding everything together. Sometimes we can stand in the middle of a beautiful summer’s day and still struggle to receive its joy. This is where Sweet Orange begins. Not by asking us to ignore life’s difficulties, but by gently reminding us that sweetness still exists.

Last month in this column, we met lavender – cool, calming, the great peacemaker, washing us clean of the day’s heat and worries. This month, as the days reach their fullest, we turn to her brighter friend, ‘Sweet Orange’.

Before We Understand an Essential Oil… We Can Feel It

If you have a bottle of Sweet Orange nearby, pause for a moment before reading further.

Simply breathe it in. Notice its roundness. Not as sharp as Lemon. Not as rich as Mandarin. Bright, yet soft. Sweet, yet wonderfully fresh. Playful. Almost as though the fragrance itself is gently rocking you.

Your body understands something long before your mind begins to explain it.

Most of us think of essential oils simply as beautiful fragrances that help us relax, sleep more deeply, lift our mood or ease physical discomfort. They certainly can do all of those things. Yet there is another way of understanding pure essential oils that many people have never encountered.

Essential oils certainly smell beautiful, but fragrance is only the beginning of their story.

They are intelligent patterns of nature, each with its own movement, character and way of communicating with the body. When we begin to understand that movement, an entirely new relationship with essential oils emerges. This understanding lies at the heart of my work – this part I call the Biodynamics of Fragrance.

Every fragrance has its own biodynamic movement – its own way of travelling through body, mind and emotions. Some fragrances rise and brighten. Some soften and harmonise. Some clarify and create space. Others gently draw us back to our centre. When we begin to recognise these movements, we stop asking, “What is this oil good for?” and begin asking, “What do I need today?”

The Innocent Harmoniser

Sweet Orange is one of the oils I return to again and again because of the beautiful way it harmonises. Its sweetness moves in a slow, circular rhythm, gently regulating and nourishing, rather like the instinctive rocking of a child. Its bright citrus qualities lift, expand and clarify.

Together, these movements quietly encourage balance wherever balance is needed.

To me, Sweet Orange carries the spirit of the child. Imagination. Wonder. Playfulness.

Messy orange juice running down your hands on a summer afternoon. Yet perhaps its greatest gift is something deeper. It reminds us of what I think of as a knowing innocence.

Not the innocence we are born with, but one that has known life’s challenges and still finds the courage to remain open – to trust again, to laugh again and to welcome joy despite everything.

Sweet Orange does not ask us to wear rose-coloured glasses. It simply reminds us that bitterness is never the whole story. Sweetness still exists.

A Gift for High Summer

There is a seasonal grace to Sweet Orange, too. In Ayurveda, high summer is the season of Pitta – the time of fire and heat, when both the body and the days can run a little too hot. Sweet Orange is one of the very few citrus oils that truly calms rather than stimulates, and its cooling sweetness is a gentle balm for an over-bright, over-busy season.

It is also one of the loveliest oils for digestion – not only of food, but of everything summer asks us to take in: travel, fuller days and late golden evenings.

When life feels a little too much to digest, Sweet Orange helps us metabolise both the food and the feelings.

 A Simple Experience

One of the beautiful things about this way of working with Essential Oils is how little it asks of you. It is quick. It is simple. There is no need to rearrange your day.

Pure essential oils, paired with carefully chosen acupuncture points, become a wonderfully gentle daily practice that supports body, mind and emotions together, often creating surprisingly immediate shifts in how we feel.

Each essential oil expresses different qualities at different points. Today, I would simply like to introduce one. If you have a well-diluted Sweet Orange oil, place a single drop onto your fingertip and breathe the fragrance in slowly. If you haven’t, you could simply cut open an orange, take in the fresh aroma, and touch the point as you do so.

If you have the oil, simply take a drop and apply it to Heart 7, sometimes known in Chinese medicine as Spirit Gate. (See image below) You will find it in the wrist crease on the little finger side of your wrist. Rest there quietly for a minute or two.

No pressure – very light touch. Nothing to achieve. Simply notice. Notice your breathing. Notice your shoulders. Notice your heart. Sometimes the smallest shifts are the most profound.

Please note: Sweet Orange is a citrus oil and may increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. It is best to keep the area where it has been applied out of direct strong sunlight for a few hours afterwards.

A Different Way of Working

Each month, I introduce another plant ally. Each one carries its own inner nature. Each has its own biodynamic movement. Each meets the body in its own unique way. This is a gentle way of working with pure essential oils that combines fragrance with carefully chosen acupuncture points. The resonance of the oil meets the resonance of the point, inviting the body back towards balance. When we feel ungrounded, Vetiver can remind us what it is to be rooted. When we feel low, Sweet Orange can gently lift us towards the light. As the same oil meets different points, it offers different gifts – here deep rest, there a return to joy.

As we come to know how each oil moves within us, and learn the points where it speaks most clearly, we gradually gather a family of trusted companions. We begin to know, almost instinctively, which one to turn to in any given moment.

Together, they reveal a different way of understanding pure essential oils and offer a beautiful framework for supporting everyday wellbeing.

Your First Steps Into the Enchanted Garden

You may be wondering what I mean by the Enchanted Garden. It is the name I give to the quiet place within each of us, beyond the noise and overwhelm of everyday life. It is where our resilience, our peace, our joy, and our true nature continue to flourish, even when life becomes difficult.

When we work with pure essential oils in this simple way, we begin tending that inner garden—nourishing our wellbeing, building emotional resilience, bringing peace to the body and helping the nervous system settle and soften.

Over time, these small daily moments become something we can return to whenever life feels overwhelming – a simple practice that helps us meet each day with a little more steadiness, clarity and ease.

If you are curious to discover more, I would love to welcome you. I have created First Steps into Your Enchanted Garden — a complimentary introductory programme exploring the way of working with pure essential oils in a new light, allowing you to begin experiencing this work in your own time.
