Unlocking Wellness Through Adventure and Nature
In the heart of every man, there exists a deep yearning for purpose, connection, and growth. For those of us feeling disconnected or overwhelmed by the relentless pressures of modern life, the idea of stepping outside our comfort zones can feel daunting, yet transformative. This is the essence of the work that Matthew Robertson has dedicated his life to — empowering individuals to rediscover themselves through adventure, connection, and the healing power of nature.
I recently had the pleasure of catching up with Matthew, founder of Momentum Media and creator of the platform Momentum Men, at a local café. Our conversation spanned a rich and varied career, from adventure travel to podcasting, and, now, to his exciting new journey into curating wellbeing-focused adventures. His passion for nature, its restorative properties, and its ability to reconnect us with our truest selves was palpable as we spoke about his incredible adventures and the profound impact these experiences have had on his own life.
The Birth of an Adventurer
Matthew’s love for adventure began at a young age. He recalls running away into nature at just 12 years old, camping alone in the forests, is where he found peace. It was his way of coping with the pressures of school, a form of escape that would shape his path. Fast forward through years of acting in New York and London, upon returning to live in the UK, Matthew realised the acting world no longer resonated with him. The call of adventure was too strong.

Determined to turn his passion for the outdoors into a career, Matthew launched an adventure travel business, curating bespoke, life-changing expeditions to remote destinations across the globe. From the hidden summits of South America to the rainforests of Southern Africa and the deserts of Jordan, Matthew organised expeditions that took people to the furthest reaches of the earth, all the while immersing himself in the awe-inspiring ways indigenous cultures thrived in harmony with nature.
Through these journeys, Matthew saw firsthand the power of nature not just as a beautiful backdrop, but as a teacher, healer, and guide. The lessons he learned from watching people connect with the wilderness became the foundation for his next chapter — helping people rediscover their joy, peace, and mental wellbeing through outdoor adventures.
Finding Healing in the Wilderness
Matthew’s story took a painful turn when his marriage ended, and he found himself navigating a period of deep personal struggle. The contrast between the external trappings of success and the internal sense of loss he experienced during that time struck a chord with him. He reflects on one particularly low point — pushing a shopping cart down a supermarket aisle, feeling utterly disconnected and alone. At his lowest, dealing with the loss of his father, divorce and the impact of Covid on his business all in quick succession, the darkest of thoughts crept in, but as he shared, it was the very idea of escaping to the wilderness — to the place he had always turned for solace — that saved him.
“There’s a certain humility and peace that comes with nature,” Matthew explains. “It is generous, patient, and egoless. You don’t need to do anything to earn its healing, it’s simply there, always offering a space for you to reconnect.”
For Matthew, nature became a refuge from the weight of his struggles, offering him a pathway to rediscover strength and resilience. He knows that for many men, opening up about emotional pain can feel incredibly difficult. The stigma surrounding vulnerability and the expectations of stoicism often stand as barriers to seeking help. Yet Matthew’s personal journey and his mission through Momentum Men are about breaking down those barriers. By creating safe, open spaces for men to explore their mental wellness, he is giving them the opportunity to find healing in a world that often leaves little room for vulnerability.

The Power of Micro-Adventures
Matthew’s newest venture is perhaps his most exciting — curating wellbeing-focused adventures that combine the transformative power of nature with a sense of purpose and community. Through Momentum Men and his upcoming retreats, Matthew seeks to create experiences for individuals who feel lost, disconnected, or simply want to step outside their comfort zones and reconnect with what truly matters.
In our conversation, Matthew spoke passionately about “micro-adventures” — short, impactful experiences that don’t require extensive time or money but offer powerful moments of self-discovery. Whether it’s a weekend hike through the woods, a sunrise spent in solitude by a remote lake, or a group retreat that combines adventure with mindfulness practices, these experiences are designed to encourage men or women to take small steps towards change and growth.
As he explains, “It’s not always about climbing a mountain or crossing an ocean. Sometimes, the biggest adventures are the ones that help you rediscover yourself in the simple, quiet moments of nature.”
Matthew’s ambition is to build a network of retreat organisers and wellness-focused adventurers who can inspire men and women to seek out experiences that prioritise their wellbeing over career progression, material wealth, or status. His message is clear — true success is not measured by external achievements or possessions, but by the depth of our relationships, our connection to nature, and our inner peace.

A Call to Action: Embrace the Outdoors
For Matthew, nature offers us the space to heal, to breathe, and to reconnect with what really matters. It’s a place that demands no perfection, only presence. The simplicity of a sunset, the awe of standing beneath towering trees, or the stillness of a forest at dawn — these are the moments that can heal the mind and rejuvenate the soul.
“The outdoors is where we belong,” Matthew says. “We are carbon, made from the earth, and nature is in our DNA. It’s not just a place to escape to, but a place to return to who we truly are.”
Matthew’s vision for the future is one where we are encouraged to step into nature, to find ourselves in its simplicity, and to reconnect with our authentic selves. Through his micro-adventures, he hopes to spark a movement that shifts the narrative around mental health and masculinity, one that embraces vulnerability, adventure, and the healing power of the great outdoors.
As our conversation drew to a close, I felt deeply inspired and reminded of the importance of connecting with nature — not just for the thrill of adventure, but for the quiet restoration it offers to the mind, body, and spirit. I promised myself to get out into nature more often, to walk through the trees and breathe in the fresh air. Sometimes, the simplest changes can make the biggest impact.
Matthew’s journey, and the adventures he curates, offer a roadmap for anyone looking to take that first step towards a more fulfilling, connected, and peaceful life. Whether you’re seeking healing, growth, or simply a chance to break free from the daily grind, the outdoors holds the key. Step outside, breathe deeply, and embrace the adventure.
